Summary: All Girls/All Math is the collective title for a group of outreach programs for high school girls run by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. One of the program is a week long summer math camp for tenth through twelfth grade girls. The campers live in a university residence hall, study mathematics, and make friends. They attend two minicourses - one on number theory and cryptography, and the other on iterated functions and chaos.
"It's a Math Thing..." is a two-day workshop open to all Nebraska high school girls which includes hands-on sessions on a variety of neat mathematical topics and experience in problem-solving.

Summary

Emporia State University (ESU) hosts four outreach programs for young women to increase their interest and participation in mathematics and science. Expanding Your Horizons is a Saturday day long conference for approximately 220 middle school girls from across Kansas. Fifty high school women in their junior year with their teachers are invited to ESU for a day long celebration of women's accomplishments in mathematics.

SMASH, Summer Mathematics And Science Holiday, is a week long non-residential summer program for 24 rising 9^th graders.

MASTER IT: Mathematics and Science To Explore caReers - Investing Together is a week long residential summer program for 24 rising 8^th graders and 24 rising 9^th graders. Each of these programs feature career discussions, hands-on workshops, and interactions with women professionals.

Summary: High school girls from Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, and Vinton Counties in Southeastern Ohio attended the GEMS 99 Workshops. GEMS participants studied topics in algebra, geometry, and statistics using technology, problem solving strategies, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning groups. There were sessions on writing across the curriculum. Students did chemistry, biology, physics, and computer science laboratory experiments. They also met women who use mathematics and science in their careers.

Summary: Mathzone is an after school club for middle school girls at the Jonas Bronck Academy, a magnet school within District 10 of the New York City Public Schools which is one of the poorest school districts in New York state. Materials utilized in math activities for these girls, logs kept by the undergraduate mentors about their observations of the young girls engaging in these activities, as well as the preliminary research findings of notes are included. These Bronx middle school girls are anxious for contact with role models, eager for activities after school, and are tolerant of mathematics activities as a means to attain these ends. The culture gap is real and creates interesting conditions not only about mathematics but also in the interactions between the two groups of girls.

Summary: SummerMath, at Mount Holyoke College, is an intensive, four week residential program for academically motivated high school women that provides new experiences of mathematics, computing, and science. The student body is diverse racially and in their mathematics background. The atmosphere is one of challenge and support: the challenge of rigorous study and difficult problems and the support of a community of teachers, residential staff, and peers. We help students acquire greater confidence in their ability to excel, greater persistence in problem-solving environments, and greater conceptual understanding of mathematics. Additional activities link to applications of mathematics and a deeper and more varied view of career options.

Summary: Saint Francis College held a summer mathematics camp for middle school girls in the summer of 1999. A total of 45 girls attended a week long camp which featured a variety of challenging activities intended to provide the middle school girls with reinforcement and enrichment of mathematical skills, enthusiasm to continue studying mathematics, interest in careers in mathematics, successful female role models, and positive learning experience.

Summary: SPWM 2000 is a five week (July 1 – August 5, 2000) intensive program for mathematically talented undergraduate women who are completing their junior year and may be contemplating graduate study in the mathematical sciences. Goals of this program are to communicate an enthusiasm for mathematics, to develop research skills, to cultivate mathematical self-confidence and independence, and to promote success in graduate school. Application deadline is March 1, 2000.

Summary: Wind, Water and Waves is a four-week Young Scholars program at Seattle University designed for middle school girls and offered in partnership with Boeing, KCM (an environmental consulting firm) and Totem Girl Scout Council. The students do what America’s top scientists do every day: perform experiments and gather data; analyze the results with charts, graphs and computers; ask questions about the significance of the outcomes. They also work with scientists on research projects; use their knowledge and skills to serve the community; learn about career opportunities; develop trust and friendships; and become part of a local network and a worldwide community.

Summary: The Women's Research Project is a successful program whose aim is to recruit and retain women undergraduates into the fields of mathematics, science, engineering and technology. Its focus is on mathematics, the engineering and technology. Its focus is on mathematics, the underpinning of all the others. Women are offered the opportunity during summer and winter intercessions to work on research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Most of the research is computer, graphing calculator or WEB based. Many of the projects involve creating computer animations of functions and analyzing how changes in parameters or moving into 3-dimensional space affects what is being studied.

The Women & Mathematics (W&M) network is a consortium sponsored by the MAA and initially consisting of Program Directors of outreach programs in mathematics for women and girls. W&M seeks to provide:

Professional development opportunities for program directors
Forums for sharing ideas and expertise
Workshops and forums for prospective directors of such programs

Virginia Kasten maintains the Women and Mathematics website, the principal forum for sharing ideas and making opportunities known to the members of the network. Participation in W&M is open to anyone interested in conversations on outreach and advocacy programs in mathematics for women and girls.
