Description of the NC W&M Program

Since 1994, the main goal of the North Carolina W&M Region has been the organization and implementation of a Math Mentoring Program for the middle schools in Wake County, NC. In 1997, the Math Mentoring Program was expanded to include the 9 middle schools in Durham County, NC as well. From November through May, each of 65 volunteer mentors is linked with 2-3 eighth-grade girls from the same school. The mentors are female professionals who are employed in math-related fields. They participate in a November Orientation. The students, at most six from each school, are chosen by their teachers for their interests in mathematics and their desire to learn more about math-related careers. Through monthly interactions, the girls learn about their mentor's job, career and lifestyle. Program activities include a visit to the mentor's workplace, field trips to place of math, science and technology interest, small group projects, and two special events. The special events are held at Meredith College (Wake) and at North Carolina Central University (Durham). The first is a Math and Computer Science Career Awareness Day. It includes hands-on workshops to expose the young women to areas of mathematics and computer science and careers that they might not see in the classroom, mentor panels, lunch and a math competition with prizes. For the second event, held on an evening in May, parents as well as mentors and students are invited. Students exhibit their projects, share their most interesting mentoring experience with the whole group, and participate in an informal mathematics competition; everyone enjoys some special math entertainment./P>

The Math Mentoring Program was supported in the past by Tensor Grants from the MAA. It currently receives corporate funding from GE Capital Mortgage Corp, Ericsson, Inc., Reichhold, Inc., Glaxo Wellcome Inc., and The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.

The second project of North Carolina W&M is a Speakers Bureau which provides women speakers to schools in the area. The brochure is mailed to approximately 100 middle and high schools in the Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh areas. In addition, speakers are provided to the Math Mentoring Program for its Career Awareness Day, to the Expanding Your Horizons Conference for 7th graders at North Carolina State University, and to Meredith College for its Math Week for rising 10th grade girls.
