Science & Mathematics Badge program
- Women and Mathematics co-sponsors a math and science badge completion
program for the Mid-America Girl Scout Office which serves the greater
Kansas City area. Each school year, we sponsor a 6 badge completion
opportunities in a variety of mathematically related areas.
Science & Mathematics Summer Day-Camp
- Summer 1995 and 1996, Rockhurst
and Women and mathematics have co-sponsored a one week science
and mathematics day-camp for young scouts. The 1996 event was entitled
Safari in Girl Scouting
and consisted of Science Sleuth Day, Computer Day and Math Day.
Tensor Grant Mentoring Program
Since 1991, Rockhurst College
has invited talented 12th grade women and minority students to come to our campus to
take calculus.
St. Theresa's Academy
(a private all women's high school) has also developed a program that invites talented
8th grade students to take Algebra 1 on their campus. We have a strong relationship
with the Mid-America Girl Scout office by offering science and mathematics badge
completion programs and a summer science and math camp for girl scouts. This program
brings together the young women (8th and 12th graders) who have demonstrated
achievement in mathematics to serve counselors for the girl scout program. In
addition, college mathematics majors serve as counselors and mentors to the 8th and
12th grade students. The young women mentors (8th grade, 12th grade, college
students) participate in two workshops each year to encourage them to pursue careers
in mathematics.
