Women and Mathematics - Montana

Status

The Montana Region is inactive at the moment while we decide on a new direction for the region. However, we continue to support the participation of young women in mathematics through our TI-82 awards program.

We awarded two calculators in May to two high school girls who achieved the highest scores in the state's annual mathematics contest. We will award two more calculators in September to two native American college women who are among the winners of NSF scholarships to pursue a degree in mathematics education within the Montana State University System.

This spring I collaborated with a group of women mathematicians and science educators at Montana State University to submit a pre-proposal to NSF to develop a program to increase the numbers of young women, particularly from Montana's rural area, who decide to pursue science, mathematics and engineering undergraduate degrees. Part of this proposal will be to help high school teachers develop local mentoring programs and extracurricular mathematics and science activities within target communities.
