Chapter 6
Exercises
1. Because there would be no temperature
difference between your hand and your head.
3. No. As the mercury expanded so would the
glass tube, hence no change in the mercury level could be
detected.
8. As the temperature of a gas increases,
its KE increases, which means the molecules move faster. The faster
moving molecules impact a greater force on the container as they
strike it.
12. Any additional energy a molecule can
absorb increases its specific heat capacity. Such materials would
then have a higher specific heat capacity.
18. The glass tube will first experience the
change in temperature. When the outside temperature goes up, the tube
expands, then the mercury.
19. If the wire expands more than the glass,
the glass will crack. If the glass expands more than the wire, a gap
will form between the wire leads and the glass.
25. The cloth is meant to provide a surface
that will allow water to evaporate. As the water evaporates, it cools
the canteen.
28. The boiling removes (releases) any heat
added to the water. That is, the evaporating water cools the water
remaining in the pot.
30. The cooking of food is the result of it
being exposed to a certain temperature. The food would then need to
cook longer, thus not saving any energy.
35. Because water at 4 C will expand whether
the temperature goes up or down.
37. It would get flipped upside down.
38. As the water freezes it will expand more
than the pipes, thus bursting them.
40. More likely to freeze.
Problems
1. It would expand 50 cm.
